Dear Archaeoentomologists, Archaeologists, Entomologists, Archaeozoologists, Archaeoichnologists, Archaeoparasitologists and friends,

The Laboratory PACEA ("From Prehistory to the Present: Culture, Environment and Anthropology"), University of Bordeaux is happy and honoured to host the 3rd International Conference in Funerary Archaeoentomology in the city of Bordeaux, on 5th June 2019.

This meeting is sponsored by the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research), the Archaeological Sciences Federation of Bordeaux and by the LaScArBx (Bordeaux Archaeological Sciences LabEx).

Archaeoentomology is the study of mainly synanthropic insect assemblages recovered during archaeological excavations. When these remains are issued from funerary contexts, they are transcribed according to forensic entomology principles and methods. This combination of archaeoentomological and forensic analyses, defined by Jean-Bernard Huchet (1996) as "Funerary Archaeoentomology", yields important new insights into our knowledge of past burial practices: secondary body handling, taphonomy of the grave, delayed burial, grave reopening and anthropogenic mummification processes.

When environmental conditions are not conducive to the preservation of the insects exoskeletons, an ichnological approach to traces or imprints present on bones or on diverse non-indigenous materials makes it possible to reconstitute, a posteriori, arthropod fossil activity in the tomb.

These two distinct approaches will be covered during the meeting.

This conference will take place in an old historic building in the city centre, the “Pôle Juridique & Judiciaire” building (Legal and Judicial dpt building), Université de Bordeaux https://eafe2019.sciencesconf.org/resource/page/id/3

The ICFAE meeting will be followed by the 16th meeting of the European Association for Forensic Entomology (EAFE) https://eafe2019.sciencesconf.org,  5th (evening) – 7th June 2017. On the 8th is scheduled a visit of the magnificent small medieval village of Saint Emilion where wine lovers will have the opportunity to taste some prestigious wines.

Bordeaux is the capital of southwestern France, located in the New Aquitaine region. It is distinguished by its exceptional 18th century architecture that has earned it the title of “Little Paris” around 200 years ago, and more recently its World Heritage status by UNESCO.

Its recent urban developments are in a city where life is good, and where gastronomy, culture, shopping and services are held, near the famous vineyards of the world’s finest wines. Many discovery tours and gourmet strolls are offered in order to taste the local produce, and particularly the prestigious wines.
